Polymer Blend and Thermoplastic Elastomer for Sanitaryware

Poly (methyl methacrylate) or PMMA is an amorphous polymer, which is transparent and rigid. However, PMMA limitation is brittleness at room temperature restrict the applications. The common methods for toughness improvement of polymer are adding plasticizers, synthesis co-polymerization or graft-polymerization and adding impact modifiers. The impact modifiers for PMMA such as acrylic rubber, natural rubber, butadiene rubber or promoted semi-interpenetrating polymer network by mixing with Poly(urethane). The applications for tough PMMA are sanitary wear, architectural rainwater goods and hospital bed. The product should not collect the bacteria, which is founded on most materials surfaces causes fever, headache, vomiting and diarrhea.

The working scope in the P-PROF research group are focusing on improving mechanical properties of PMMA by adding impact modifier and antibacterial performance under UV and Non-UV condition of co-antibacterial agents (HPQM and Nano-titanium dioxide particles) in PMMA.
